(Art, Coolayd, & Tanny)
Art Lopez
Art Lopez is the founder and musical director of the
Mambo Jazz Kings. He is the glue that keeps the act
together and the driving force behind this
entertainment package. On stage he is the
lead/rhythm guitar player. Art has played with many
bands throughout his life. He started off playing the
drums at an early age but in high school made the
switch to guitar. His local mentors growing up were,
“The Boogie Kings” and “The TSU Tornados.”  Arts
style of direction and influence for the Mambo Jazz
Kings has come from none other than the great
Tower of Power.

Art lays down a sweet and smooth melody that keeps
the audience groovin every time the band takes the
stage!
Mike 'Coolayd' Rios
Coolayde comes to MJK with years of
experience in playing a funky bass guitar! He
has played with many bands including
Groovezilla, GrooveCity, Funksionatics, and
L.O.P.  Along with being an accomplished
Bass player, Coolayd can lay down some
smooth harmony on the mic!
Tanny Busby
“Chairman of the Boards” (Tanny Busby) specialty is
Arranging, Composing and Producing R&B and
Smooth Jazz Compositions.  His playing style adds
the body & soul to the Mambo Jazz Kings (MJK)
Sound. Simply put; he just fills it up!!! - to capture
that song’s mood.

His musical background ranges from Bach to Jazz to
R&B.  In Fort Worth, TX he started out as a classical
pianist at an early age.  His travels took him all over
the United States, participating in the International
Van Cliburn Competitions and National Guild Playing
Auditions (NPPA). By the way, this is how he got
introduced to Houston.  

Piano has always been his primary instrument.  
However thru out his musical career he develop
skills on other instruments.  At IMT High School, he
followed in his Dad’s footsteps by playing the
Trumpet, then other brass instruments. From there
he progress to the String Bass.  

His professional musical career started by playing
bass for various Bands in Houston.  During this
period he did satellite recordings for producers
affiliated with Motown and Philly.  The next level
came when Tanny joined the “TSU Toronados”
(recording band for Archie Bell & the Drells “Tighten
Up”); this is where returned to the Keyboards.

He has appeared or toured with Johnny Taylor,  
James Brown, Sly ant the Family Stones, Whispers,
Dells, Osmonds, Impressions, Red Fox, Michael
Jackson, Gladys Knight; just to name a few.

“Chairman of the Boards” contribution to the
energetic Rhythm Section is his contemporary chord
structure that captures the atmosphere for the MJK’
s Dynamic Featured Vocalists and Mighty Horn
Section.
